Justice for Black Lives - Now & Forever

Since the release of the video of George Floyd’s murder on Memorial Day weekend, community leaders, organizers and activists have demanded justice and called for the dismantling of systemic oppression that has disproportionately impacted Black people. Richmond LAND stands in solidarity with the righteous rage, rebellion and action for change.

The Movement for Black Lives (M4BL) has called for a week of action, with today’s focus on the demand for community control. Which they define as, “The most impacted in our communities need to control the laws, institutions, and policies that are meant to serve us – from our schools to our local budgets, economies, and police department.” https://m4bl.org/week-of-action/thursday/

At Richmond LAND we are working toward a restorative economy through community control of housing, property, and land. This year in our Building Power program, fellows developed 8 Principles for Community Development through a Black Women’s Lens that we are working to incorporate in our work. These principles provide concrete actions in the field for combating anti-Black racism with an intersectional analysis.

What does community control look and feel like for you? How can we ensure that these efforts uplift and benefit Black people?
